Dopo l’ultimo round di qualificazione a Euro 2008, ritorna la Premier League, così come la Marcia inarrestabile dell’Arsenal, che inanella il suo ventottesimo risultato utile consecutive. Con diverse difficoltà, e con ben 6 titolari assenti (Fabregàs squalificato, Hleb, Flamini, Van Persie, Diaby e Gilberto infortunati), I Gunners riescono comunque ad avere la meglio sul lucchetto difensivo del Wigan, proprio nei minuti finali del match, dopo una gara abbastanza buona.

Nonostante la presenza della sua difesa titolare, Arsenio deve far fronte ad una bella emergenza, impostando il centrocampo con Ebouè, Diarra, Denilson e Rosicky, a supportare la coppia d’attacco Adebayor-Walcott. D’altro canto, Frank Barlow (in attesa che arrivi Steve Bruce come nuovo, terzo manager della stagione), decide di settare una squadra votata al contenimento della forza offensiva dei nostri e alle ripartenze, affidate al solo Bent come punta unica.

Il resto della formazione si schiera infatti con Pollitt tra i pali, Boyce, Granqvist, Bramble e Kilbane a difesa, e con la mediana composta da Olembe, Landzaat, Scharner, Brown e Koumas. Direzione di gara affidata invece a Walton (voto 4,5).

Il tatticismo avversario sarà il tema dominante della gara, con poche occasioni da rete per entrambe le squadre. Il 4-1-4-1 disegnato dai Latics ha in questo senso il compito di limitare le sortite offensive dell’Arsenal, e renderci la vita difficile. La prima occasione è degli ospiti, al 13’, quando il colpo di testa di Scharner, su corner, si spegne sul fondo. I Gunners rispondono 3 minuti dopo, con una botta dalla distanza di Diarra, alta sopra la traversa. Al 21’ ci prova Adebayor, dopo un bello scambio con Walcott; Pollitt para, deviando in corner.

Col passare dei minuti, Walcott aumenta la velocità e al 31’ si beve Bramble in accelerazione, mettendo al centro un pallone invitante dalla destra, senza però trovare Ebouè. Solo 2 minuti dopo, i Latics trovano il contrattacco, con l’ottimo cross di Boyce che serve Bent: la punta anticipa Tourè, ma il suo colpo di testa manca di precisione. Poi, al 35’ ancora Boyce a rendersi protagonista, salvando la sua porta da un velenoso tocco di Walcott sottomisura. Il primo tempo termina con una conclusione dalla distanza di Denilson, deviata pericolosamente da Granqvist verso il palo opposto.

Piuttosto frustrante. Nel secondo tempo, la musica non sarebbe cambiata granchè. Ma l’Arsenal inizia a dominare. Al 61’, il togolese ha l’occasione migliore della partita, ma un gran tackle di Boyce gli sfila via la palla, rendendo tutto vano. A 10 minuti dalla fine, Arsenio sostituisce l’infortunato Walcott con Nicklas Bendtner, dopo che aveva sostituito Ebouè con Eduardo al 68’. E così, al minuto 83, l’Arsenal spezza il catenaccio dei Latics: Bendtner innesca Sagna sulla corsia di destra, e il cross del francese trova Gallas nell’area piccola, che trasforma con un colpo di testa in anticipo.

Arsenal in vantaggio e tripudio dell’Emirates. Ma non finisce qui. All’85’ l’Arsenal raddoppia, ancora con Bendtner che orchestra magistralmente il contropiede, servendo poi Rosicky a destra; il piccolo Mozart controlla al limite dell’area e tira di precisione sul palo lontano, per il 2-0 finale. After the last Euro 2008 qualifying round, the Premiership restarts as the winning streak by the Gunners (28 unbeaten matches in all competitions). With some difficulties and with six unavailable players (Fabregàs suspended, Hleb, Flamini, Van Persie, Diaby and Gilberto injured), the Arsenal managed to unlock the defensive block of Wigan in the late minutes of the match, after a pretty good football performance. 

Despite of the presence of the regular defensive four, Wengèr must face the emergency of all his unavailable players, sending in Ebouè, Diarra, Denilson and Rosicky in the midfield, to support Adebayor and Walcott. On the other hand, Frank Barlow (waiting for Steve Bruce as new manager) chooses to set the formation in order to contain the Gunners offensive power and to counterattack with the lonely Bent as striker.

With Pollitt as keeper, the defensive line is composed by Boyce, Granqvist, Bramble and Kilbane; the five men of the midfield are Olembe, Landzaat, Scharner, Brown and Koumas. The direction of the game is provided by Walton.

The defensive awareness of the hosts has been the dominant theme of the game, with few chances to score for both sides. The 4-1-4-1 formation displayed by the Latics has the task to provide such a defensive pressure and to make it difficult for Arsenal to attack. Wigan take the first chance, at 13’, but the header by Scharner, on corner, finishes wide. The Gunners answers three minutes later, with a long-range effort by Diarra, over the bar. At 21’ Adebayor tries, after a good ball exchange with Walcott; Pollitt saves, deflecting the ball in corner.

 Walcott increases his speed and at 31’ burns Bramble in acceleration on the right side, centering the ball in the area, but Ebouè misses the chance. Just 2 minutes later, the Latics find the counterstrike, with a good cross by Boyce; Bent anticipates Tourè, but his header has no accuracy. Then, at 35’, Boyce saves his net, on a poisonous touch by Walcott. The first half ends with a long-range shot by Denilson, deflected by Granqvist near the post. It was frustrating. The game displayed in the second half would not have changed. And Arsenal starts to dominate.

At 61’, the Togolese striker has the best chance of the game, but a great tackle by Boyce dispossesses him of the ball, saving the Latics. With 10 minutes left, Wengèr replaces the injured Walcott with NIcklas Bendtner, having sent in Eduardo at 68’. At 83’, the Wigan lock is broken: Bendtner sends Sagna clear on the right channel and the French crosses the ball in for the accurrent Gallas, who converts with a great header.

The Emirates explodes. But at 85’, Arsenal makes it 2 -0. Bendtner again directs the counterattack, serving Rosicky on the right wing; Lil Mozart collects the ball on the edge of the area and blows the shot on the far post, for the final, deserved result. With the Man Utd defeated at Reebok stadium, Arsenal confirms the leading position, approaching more and more the dream to win the Premier League title.[/lang_en]
